Description

In the 1930s, my grandmother and her sister (marriageable girls back then) were preparing the dowry needlecrafts very carefully to detail, while dreaming about their forthcoming marriage and the future family they were about to make.

The needlecrafts on the white clothes were ordered in the monasteries, like any other family which could afford it.

The nuns used to embroider using their own techniques and in that way, they could support financially the monastery. This particular bed sheet was embroidered in 1936 at the monastery of Holy Mother at Chios island in the cutwork technique (the initial letters of the first and the last name are K.K, which stands for Katina Karivali) while the brand was embroidered in flat embroidery on the side part of the bed sheet. At that time, people used to set the beds on the side of the wall and the outer side of the bed sheets was always decorated. The scabbard around is hand-sewed on a stitch in order to ensure its symmetry. The cloth is linen made of cotton and there are some yellow spots due to its age.
